THE GREAT, THE GOOD, AND THE GODLY, THE COMMON AND THE NOT SO COMMON

Over the years the Company, whether in the form of SAMUEL KINGDON, GARTON & JARVIS, KING & MUNK or GARTON & KING, has performed work for countless thousands of Customers. For the period from the 1860s until the beginning of the Second World War a vast amount of information can be found in the Records that still exist as to the names of these customers, what works the company performed for them and often when.

Now if you expect a comprehensive list, A - Z and in Date Order then I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed! Likewise, if there’s a tale in your family history about Great Grandma buying a new fireset from G & K’s shop - no you won’t find it listed either. What I can give you is a list of Persons, Businesses & Institutions that became longstanding customers of the Company or who engaged the Company to carry out work.

A Word of Warning - generally the lists follow a ‘social’ order but descendents should not get offended if Sam Smith appears above The Right Honourable John Brown, neither should one expect 21st Century Political Correctness or Terminology - If a location was described as an Asylum or Workhouse then that is how it is shown here. Some of the locations are vague - it was extremely commonplace to refer to M. Brown Esq, Dibley without any indication of County or Area - and for the youngsters reading this, NO, they did NOT have Postcodes in that era!

Names and places MAY APPEAR IN MORE THAN ONE LIST. Most of the work referred to in these lists was undertaken between 1860 - 1900

Once again - and remarkably few of you who visit this website ever take me up on this - IF you have any queries, comments or criticisms , want me to give a Talk or just wish for further information please get back to me. There’s the About Me Page and the Guestbook. Details of other available Talks are on the Booklets & Talks page.
