It has to be said that this Chapter on the Website will probably not grab everyone’s interest, but those that do scroll through will find a fascinating, even enthralling record of the main types of the Company’s Stoves produced between about 1850 and 1870 and just where they ended up – some as far as Singapore, Cape Town, Australia and New Zealand.

If you have lived some, or all of your life in the Exeter area you will see many a familiar name – you may not know much about them but a diversion to the Exeter Memories Site may enlighten you. There are names that appear as Street Names – or names on Buildings, there are names of Titled People and Country Mansions; some are names of Businesses, although many are no longer on our High Streets. Many of those listed were Tradesmen, Builders or Prominent Citizens of the day and that’s perhaps some will strike a chord.

Some of the property addresses carry on in the same family, others in the care of the National Trust, or English Heritage or have experienced a complete change of use to say Care Homes or Hotels. Some unfortunately are gone forever, having crumbled away or burnt to a shell never to be rebuilt or just bulldozed away in the name of ‘progress’ or Blitzed in the War.

Most of the information shown has come from just one ledger. It would not have been the only record – there would have been two or three or more – there would be the Day Book, the Cash Sale Book and an Account Holders Book perhaps. A tantalising glimpse is afforded by a loose A – Z index from another ledger. The index suggests that this book held at least 350 pages – not all used but a hefty book nonetheless. Entries show many a name shown in the Stove Ledger but what products it records as being sold one can but guess at.

The STOVE REGISTER that I have reproduced in part will, by the time this page gets loaded on to the website, have been returned to the shelves of the Devon Record Office – it is there for anyone to look through. Its Catalogue Number is 2783B A16. Here one can add some meat to what I have placed on the following pages; the size of stove, the date it was sold and the cost in good old fashioned Pounds, Shillings and Pence. The irmation I have reproduced is, in some instances, somewhat scanty – addresses are, at best minimal, sometimes they aren’t even entered. Deciphering the handwritten script is not always easy and the letters, particularly J T S M and N are difficult to read, some places are spelt phonetically and there are countless abbreviations. ‘Bart’ is Baronet – not Bartholomew and certainly nothing to do with The Simpsons! and there were numerous others that were often a simplification of a Christian name. Where I have placed a question mark this indicates that my interpretation, accuracy of the information or spelling maybe wrong.

The main Types of Stoves covered in these Records are the Cottage, the Ordinary Enclosed, the Medium, Exonian and Universal but in the 20 years covered by this Record new stoves were introduced and improvements made to the original Models. There are also a few ‘other company’ or, to put it as the entry in the ledger states, ‘odd makes’ and Devon Farmhouse Stoves and Ranges.

Images of the various designs have been added to this chapter but the catalogues date from 1889 and 1900 respectively and may not be exact representations of the stoves from the 1850s and 1860s. One should bear in mind that the Company Name changed from Garton & Jarvis to Garton & King in March 1863 which makes it easy to date the approximate age of any stove found – IF you find one!

To give you a few Facts & Figures:-

Between July 1850 and about September 1870 the approximate total sales of these stoves amounted to £28,875. In today’s money that’s about £1.5 million: approaching 4,500 Stoves.

The most popular stove in numbers was the MEDIUM followed by the COTTAGE.

The MEDIUM brought in 47%, £13,500 of all sales for this 20 year period and accounted for 2455 units.

The COTTAGE Stove – to which Prince Albert took a liking - sold 1290 units – 32% of which were exported, nearly all to Australia and New Zealand.

The financially most productive year in this 20 year period was 1858.

After 1870 only a few records appear – it may be that information was recorded in another book of which there is no trace; the last entry recorded inj this volume is for December 1903 when a 6’ wide EXONIAN STOVE was sold to the Deaf and Dumb Institute (presumably in Exeter) – costing £30, by then the Cast Iron Victorian Range was experiencing a considerable decline in popularity.

Around 1873 Gas Cookers were being hired out by Gas Companies, Mr Gladstone stated, in 1877, that “Cooking by gas is clean, economical and not unsavoury.”

By 1905 Electric Cookers appeared on the market having been introduced to the public at Crystal Palace in 1891 and at the Chicago World Fair in 1893 although the Electric Cooker did not really become popular with the public until the 1930s when eventually electricity became available to country districts as well as towns and cities. By 1935 the National Grid System was completed. As well as the coal range the early 1900s offered coal and gas ranges, gas burners to convert the coal range to gas, electric ranges and even oil cookers.

The decline in popularity of the coal range affected the Company’s turnover and they had to wait until the very early 1930s before salvation appeared from abroad in the form of the AGA and they secured the Agency for this iconic cooker that remains with the successors to Garton & Jarvis and Garton & King Ltd to this day.

A Final Note

Of the 4,500+ stoves produced by the Company from their Waterbear Street Foundry in the centre of Exeter between 1850 & 1870 only TWO examples are known to me to still exist – both in their original locations – apart from these and about 30 at the bottom of Sydney Harbour I know of no others.
Please let me know if you know or discover the whereabouts of any others – whatever the type they will have either Garton & Jarvis (up to March1863) or Garton & King (beyond March 1863) cast prominently into them – see the images in this Chapter and the Cooking Stove Chapter.

Entries appear as entered in the Original Order Book; usually the first in each Stove Type is the earliest (around July 1850) and the last as late as September 1870. There may be multiple entries for the same name, each entry may refer to one or more stoves of the category shown against the name.

Entries after “Exonia” may refer to less popular stoves or ranges or Other Companies’ Products which were recorded separately in the Order Book between September 1850 and December 1870.
